Located in the middle of Denmark, the island has been a gathering place for clans and kings since ancient times. Hence the name Samsø.
Samsø is one of Denmark's smallest municipalities. The island is approximately 28 km long in a straight line. There are 22 different villages, and almost all of them have a village pond (a fire pond). There are just over 3,700 permanent residents on the island, but during the holiday season, the island is visited by approximately 370,000 guests.
